The Mahabharata tells of Karna, who gave away gold generously throughout his life but never offered food or water to his own ancestors. When he died, he was offered gold and jewels in the afterlife instead of food, and asked Indra why he received no nourishment. Indra explained that Karna had never repaid his Pitru Rina, the debt owed to ancestors. Karna was sent back to earth for sixteen days to perform Shraddha and Tarpan, and this period is what we now observe every year as Pitru Paksha.
Tarpan itself means offering water mixed with black sesame seeds (til), along with barley and Kusha grass in the full traditional form, poured with the names and gotra of one’s ancestors spoken aloud. Water represents nourishment in its most basic form, and til is held to carry that nourishment through to the ancestors in the subtle realm they now occupy. Performed daily through the sixteen days of Pitru Paksha, or at minimum on the specific tithi of an ancestor’s passing, Tarpan is considered one of the most direct ways a descendant can repay this debt.
