Maha Skanda Sashti Pooja 2026: Samuhik Abhisheka and Shathru Samhara Homa to Lord Subramanya

Maha Skanda Sashti is the day devotees remember how Lord Subramanya, also known as Skanda and Murugan, ended the demon Surapadman. Many families keep the six days before it as a vow. Not everyone can reach a temple on the day itself. This Maha Skanda Sashti Pooja is a samuhik pooja, a group offering, so you can take part wherever you live. Abhisheka, Shathru Samhara Homa and Archana are offered to Lord Subramanya on Sunday 15 November 2026 for ₹2,350 per head.

The pooja is performed at the Ayyampettai Shiva Temple, near Kumbakonam, in your name and star. The priests recite your name and nakshatra in the sankalpam, the formal statement of intent that opens every pooja, and the offerings are made on your behalf. You do not need to travel and you do not need to be present. Share your name and nakshatra when you book.

Why Skanda Sashti matters

Why Lord Subramanya Is Worshipped on Maha Skanda Sashti

Skanda Sashti is the six-day observance in the Tamil month of Aippasi that ends on Soorasamharam, the day Lord Subramanya defeats the demon Surapadman. In 2026 the vratam begins on Tuesday 10 November, Soorasamharam falls on Sunday 15 November, and Thirukalyanam, the wedding of the Lord to Valli and Devasena, follows on Monday 16 November.

The Maha Skanda Sashti Pooja and the story of Surapadman

The tradition tells it this way. Surapadman performed severe tapasya and won boons that made him almost impossible to defeat. He believed that only a son of Shiva could end him, and that Shiva, absorbed in meditation, would never have a son. He ruled the worlds and oppressed the devas without fear.

The devas then went to Shiva for help. From Shiva’s third eye came six sparks of divine fire. They became six infants, who were cared for by the six Krittikas, and Parvati later joined them into one child with six faces. This is Shanmukha, the Lord Skanda. Parvati gave him the Vel, the spear of divine knowledge, and he set out as Devasenapati, the commander of the divine army, to meet Surapadman.

Shathru Samhara, in plain words

Shathru means enemy. Samhara means ending or dissolving. Shathru Samhara is the ending of what stands against you, and the Shathru Samhara Homa is the fire ritual devotees traditionally turn to for it.

The battle lasts six days and ends on the sixth, Soorasamharam. In the Tamil telling, Surapadman takes many forms and is finally revealed as a great mango tree. The Vel splits it in two, and the two halves become the peacock, which is the Lord’s vahana, and the rooster, which is the emblem on his banner. The next day, Murugan marries Valli and Devasena.

The story appears in the Skanda Purana and is retold at length in Tamil in the Kanda Puranam. Many devotees read the demon as a symbol of the inner enemies of ego, anger and delusion, and the six days of fasting and prayer as the work of defeating them. Skanda is also remembered as the Lord who explained the meaning of Om to his father Shiva at Swamimalai, which is why students and seekers of clarity pray to him as well.

Who Takes Up the Maha Skanda Sashti Pooja

Devotees come to Lord Subramanya with very different needs. These are the four situations in which families most often book this pooja.

Facing opposition or conflict

Shatrubadha, the affliction caused by enemies, is the traditional reason to approach the Lord as Shathru Samhara. People dealing with persistent opposition at work, a family dispute or a long legal matter often book this pooja at Sashti.

Students and seekers of clarity

Skanda is the Lord who taught the meaning of Om. Students facing exams, parents of children who struggle to focus, and anyone starting a new course of study pray to him for clear thinking and steady effort.

Business and career

As Devasenapati, the commander of the divine army, Lord Subramanya is the deity of leadership and decisive action. Business owners and professionals ask for direction and courage at a turning point.

Marriage and children

The wedding of Murugan to Valli and Devasena is celebrated the day after Soorasamharam. Couples and families traditionally pray to him for a suitable match, a harmonious marriage and children.

What Is Included in This Samuhik Pooja

Three offerings are made to Lord Subramanya, and each one is made in your name and star.

Abhisheka. The ritual bathing of the deity, the central act of worship on a festival day. Milk and other sacred substances are traditionally used.

Shathru Samhara Homa. A fire ritual in which mantras to Lord Subramanya are offered into the sacred fire. It is the part of the pooja that devotees associate most closely with the ending of enemies and obstacles.

Archana. The offering of the Lord’s names with flowers while the priest recites your name and nakshatra. It closes the pooja and carries your sankalpam to the deity.

Sankalpam in your name and star. Every booking is recorded individually, so the priests state your name and nakshatra at the start. It is one group pooja, and each person is still named.

One fixed date. The pooja is performed on Sunday 15 November 2026, Soorasamharam, at the Ayyampettai Shiva Temple. It is not a multi-day package.
