The Legend of Thiruparankundram
Why Thiruparankundram is one of the six abodes
Thiruparankundram is remembered as the place of Murugan’s divine marriage to Devasena, also called Deivayanai, the daughter of Indra. After Murugan defeated Surapadman, the devas offered her to him as a mark of gratitude, and the wedding is said to have taken place here.
The shrine sits on a hillock outside Madurai, and the sanctum is cut into the rock. Sources date the temple to the Pandya period. The wedding links it closely to the Thirukalyanam that follows Soorasamharam.
Thiruparankundram and Skanda Sashti
Because the legend here is the wedding, devotees traditionally connect Thiruparankundram with Thirukalyanam, the day after Soorasamharam. Karthigai Deepam, the festival of lamps, is among the most vibrant days at this temple.
For the 2026 dates and the vratam, see the Skanda Sashti 2026 guide. The wider legend is in the Soorasamharam story.
