What Is Amavasya Tarpan?

Why Amavasya Tarpan online is offered on the new moon day

Tarpan comes from a Sanskrit root meaning to satisfy. It is the offering of water mixed with black sesame seeds (til) to the Pitrus, the departed ancestors, and in its full form uses barley and kusha grass as well. Water is nourishment in its simplest form, and til is held to carry that nourishment across to the ancestors in the subtle realm. The Manu Smriti places Tarpan among the five great daily sacrifices, naming the offering to the ancestors as the Pitru Yajna.

Amavasya, the new moon, is the day most closely linked with the Pitrus. On that day the Moon is withdrawn from the sky, and the tradition regards it as the time when offerings to the ancestors are most readily received. That is why Tarpan is performed on every Amavasya through the year, and not only in the fortnight of Pitru Paksha.

Certain Amavasyas carry added weight. Mahalaya Amavasya closes Pitru Paksha. Aadi Amavasya and Thai Amavasya are especially honoured in the Tamil tradition, and Mauni Amavasya in the month of Magha is associated with Tarpan as well.

The Mahabharata gives the reason this duty matters. Karna gave away gold throughout his life but never offered food or water to his forefathers, and in the next world he was offered only gold. He was sent back to earth to make the offering, and the debt he had missed is called Pitru Rina. Tarpan is the simplest way a descendant repays it.

Who Is This For

Who Should Book the Amavasya Tarpan Online?

Anyone with ancestors to remember can offer Tarpan. These are the people who most often book it.

Families honouring parents and grandparents

Households that wish to remember their forefathers every month, beyond the yearly Shraddha.

Those who recently lost a family member

If a parent or relative passed away in the past year, a monthly Tarpan is a way to keep offering for them with care.

Families living outside India

Many families abroad book the Amavasya Tarpan for ancestors back home so the monthly duty is never missed.

People who feel an ancestral concern

When delays, obstacles or discord at home are linked to unaddressed ancestral debt, Tarpan is among the first remedies tradition suggests.

What the Ritual Offers

Amavasya Tarpan Benefits and Prayer Intentions

These are devotional intentions. Tarpan honours the ancestors and invites their goodwill. It is a prayer and not a guaranteed result.

Ancestral blessings for the family

The main purpose of Tarpan: inviting the goodwill and protection of the Pitru Devatas.

Peace for the departed

Water and sesame are offered so that the ancestors are nourished and at peace.

Repaying Pitru Rina

Tarpan is the simplest, most direct way to repay the debt owed to ancestors for life, name and lineage.

Ease in the family

A family that maintains its ancestral duties is traditionally said to see smoother auspicious events and steadier wellbeing.

Continuity of duty

Monthly offerings keep the practice steady, so it does not depend on a single fortnight each year.

Tarpan does not replace the annual Varshika Shraddha. The two work together, with Tarpan as the water offering and Shraddha as the fuller rite.
