Tucked into a quiet lane near Bhosala Ghat in Varanasi is a shrine that most pilgrims walk straight past. It is dedicated to the original physicians of the Hindu tradition, the Ashwini Kumaras, twin sons of Surya and the divine doctors of the gods. In a city crowded with famous temples, this small shrine has quietly held its original purpose for centuries, and that purpose is healing.
Who Are the Ashwini Kumaras?
The Ashwini Kumaras are the twin celestial physicians, the sons of Surya, and the masters of Ayurveda in its divine origin. The tradition describes them as healers of the sick, restorers of sight to the blind, and, in the accounts preserved in the Puranas, capable of bringing back those on the very edge of death. They are among the oldest healing deities in the Vedic tradition, invoked long before medicine took the forms we know today.
The Tapas That Brought Shiva Here
According to the Kashi Khand, a part of Skanda Purana, the sacred text describing the holy geography of Varanasi, the twins performed intense tapas at this very spot in Kashi. Lord Shiva manifested here in answer to that penance and permitted them to install twin Shivalingas at the site. Those two lingas, worshipped together, are known as Ashwini Kumareshwar, and they remain the object of worship at the shrine today.
The Kashi Khand states plainly that whoever worships these lingas receives blessings of every kind. In practice, and for as long as anyone can trace, this shrine has been sought out for one thing above all: recovery from illness.
Why Devotees Come
Devotees visit this shrine praying for recovery from illness, for physical vitality, and for long term health, whether for themselves or for someone in their family. In the Shaiva tradition, abhishekam of the Shivalinga is the worship most closely associated with prayers concerning health and physical complications, and here that worship is offered before lingas installed by the divine physicians themselves.
There is something quietly moving about the place. In a city where the great temples draw enormous crowds, this small shrine goes largely unnoticed, and yet it has continued to serve the purpose it was established for without interruption. It is, as one might say, a forgotten corner of Kashi still radiating its original function.
Visiting the Shrine
The temple lies near Bhosala Ghat in Varanasi, along the lanes that run back from the ghats. It is small and easily missed, which is precisely why finding it feels like a discovery rather than a stop on an itinerary. Pilgrims who come to Kashi for the great temples may wish to seek this one out as well, particularly those carrying prayers for the health of someone they love.
