Vedic Sun Sign Calculator: Find Your Surya Rashi

Your Vedic Sun sign is the sign the Sun occupied at your birth, measured in the sidereal zodiac with Lahiri ayanamsha. For most birth dates it is the sign before your Western Sun sign, because the two zodiacs are about 24 degrees apart. The calculator also gives the Sun’s nakshatra and pada.

What does the Vedic Sun sign calculator show?

The calculator shows the sign your Sun occupied at birth, how many degrees into that sign it stood, the nakshatra and pada, and the house it falls in if you give your birth time. It lists the other eight planets in a table too.

Western astrology leads with the Sun sign, so it is the sign most people know. Jyotisha puts the Moon sign and Lagna first and treats the Sun as one of nine grahas. The Vedic Sun sign still matters, because the Sun’s sign and house are read for authority, vitality and the relationship with the father.

How this vedic sun sign calculator differs from a Western one

A Western calculator uses the tropical zodiac, which starts at the March equinox. A Vedic calculator uses the sidereal zodiac, which stays fixed to the stars. The gap between them is the ayanamsha, about 24 degrees 14 minutes in late 2026, so the Sun enters each Vedic sign about 24 days later.

Someone born on 5 May, for example, is Taurus in the Western system and Mesha (Aries) in the Vedic system, because the Sun was still in Aries by Lahiri. Someone born on 20 May is Taurus in both. Only birth dates in the last week or so of a Western sign usually keep the same sign.

How is the Sun read in a Vedic chart?

The Sun is the natural significator of the soul (atma), the father, authority and vitality in classical texts. Its sign shows the setting in which these themes play out, and its house shows the area of life.

Dignity matters too. A Sun in Simha or Mesha is traditionally read as comfortable, and a Sun in Tula as under strain. These are starting points for a reader, and the full picture depends on aspects, the Lagna lord and the running dasha.

Vedic Sun Sign Calculator: Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Vedic Sun sign calculator?

A Vedic Sun sign calculator finds the sign the Sun occupied at your birth in the sidereal zodiac. It uses your birth date, time and place and the Lahiri ayanamsha, so the answer often differs from the Western Sun sign.

Why is my Vedic Sun sign different from my Western Sun sign?

The two systems use different zodiacs. Western astrology is tropical and Vedic astrology is sidereal, about 24 degrees apart. The Sun therefore reaches each sign about 24 days later in the Vedic system.

Does the Sun sign matter in Vedic astrology?

Yes, but the Moon sign and Lagna are usually read first. The Sun’s sign, house and nakshatra are used for themes such as authority, vitality and the father.

What is Surya Rashi?

Surya Rashi means the sign of the Sun. It is the zodiac sign the Sun occupied at birth, counted in the Vedic sidereal zodiac.

Do I need my birth time for the Sun sign?

Not usually. The Sun stays in a sign for about a month, so the date is enough unless the Sun changed sign on your birth date. The calculator will tell you if that happened.

Which Sun sign should I use for pooja or muhurat?

Poojas and muhurat use the Moon sign and nakshatra, not the Sun sign. Use the Janma Nakshatra calculator for those, or ask Dr. Mekhala when booking.
