What does the Rashi calculator show?

The Rashi calculator shows your Moon sign in Sanskrit, with the Western name and the Tamil name beside it. It also gives the Rashi lord, the element, the quality of the sign, the degree the Moon had reached and your nakshatra with its pada.

In Indian practice, Rashi usually means the Moon sign, and it is the sign used for most predictions and for names in everyday use. Newspapers and apps that give a Rashi phalam (daily or yearly horoscope) assume this sign. Your Western Sun sign is a different thing, and the two often differ.

How this rashi calculator works out your Moon sign

The calculator finds the Moon’s longitude at your exact birth moment using your birth city’s historical time zone. It subtracts the Lahiri ayanamsha to reach the sidereal zodiac, then reads the sign from that longitude. Each Rashi covers 30 degrees.

The Moon moves about 13 degrees a day, so it spends roughly two and a quarter days in each sign. If you do not know your birth time, the calculator checks whether the Moon stayed in one sign all day and tells you if the exact time is needed.

Which Rashi do you use for predictions?

Use your Moon sign for Rashi phalam, Sade Sati and Chandrashtama, and for the Gochar (transit) readings that most Indian panchangs publish. Use your Lagna for house-based readings of the chart, and your nakshatra for pooja sankalpams and dasha.

If a priest or an astrologer asks for your Rashi, give your Moon sign from this calculator. If you were told a different one in the past, the usual reasons are a Western Sun sign, a different ayanamsha, or a birth time that was off by some hours.

Rashi Calculator: Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Rashi calculator?

A Rashi calculator finds the zodiac sign the Moon was in when you were born, in the Vedic sidereal zodiac. It needs your birth date, time and place and returns your Rashi, its lord, element and your nakshatra.

How do I find my Rashi by date of birth?

Enter your birth date, time and birth city above. The Moon’s position at that moment decides your Rashi, so the date alone is not always enough when the Moon changes sign during the day.

What is the difference between Rashi and Lagna?

Rashi is your Moon sign, and Lagna is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at birth. They can be the same or different. Use the Lagna calculator for the rising sign.

What is my Rashi in Tamil?

The calculator shows the Tamil name beside the Sanskrit one: Mesham, Rishabam, Midhunam, Katakam, Simmam, Kanni, Thulam, Viruchigam, Dhanusu, Makaram, Kumbham and Meenam.

Why is my Vedic Rashi different from my Western Moon sign?

Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which sits about 24 degrees behind the tropical zodiac. The Moon therefore often falls one sign earlier in a Vedic chart.

Does the calculator tell me if I am in Sade Sati?

Yes. After your result it compares Saturn’s current sign with your Rashi and says whether you are in the Rising, Peak or Setting phase, or in Kantak or Ashtama Shani. For exact dates use the Sade Sati calculator.
