Porutham Calculator: Ten Porutham Marriage Matching by Birth Star
Porutham is the South Indian method of horoscope matching. It compares the bride’s and groom’s birth stars and Moon signs against ten tests: Dina, Gana, Mahendra, Stree Deergha, Yoni, Rasi, Rasyadhipathi, Vasya, Rajju and Vedha. This calculator runs all ten and also shows the Nadi and Bhakoot checks.

Enter both partners’ birth details. Only the Moon sign and nakshatra are used, so a birth time is needed only when the Moon changes nakshatra on the birth date. Everything is calculated in your browser and nothing is stored.

What does the Porutham calculator check?
It checks ten poruthams from the Moon sign and nakshatra of each partner. Each porutham gets a Matches or Does not match result with the reason, so a reader can see exactly why. The page also reports the Nadi and Bhakoot checks used in the North Indian 36-point system.
Porutham is the usual practice in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala families, and it is what a priest means by Jathaka Porutham or Thirumana Porutham. The same Moon sign and nakshatra feed every test, which is why the calculator only needs the birth star and Rashi of each partner.
How this porutham calculator applies the ten tests
The calculator finds each partner’s Moon sign and nakshatra from their birth details. It then counts stars and signs between the two and checks each test against the traditional rule. For example, Rajju compares the body part each star belongs to, and Vedha checks whether the two stars form an afflicting pair.
Readers differ on how some poruthams are applied. Rasi, Stree Deergha and Vasya in particular have more than one version, and this calculator uses the commonly published one and shows its reasoning. Most readers give extra weight to Rajju and Vedha.
Porutham Calculator at a glance
| Porutham | What it is traditionally associated with |
|---|---|
| Dina | Health and well-being of the couple |
| Gana | Temperament and nature |
| Mahendra | Prosperity and children |
| Stree Deergha | Welfare and prosperity of the bride |
| Yoni | Physical and instinctive compatibility |
| Rasi | Growth of the family |
| Rasyadhipathi | Friendship between the sign lords |
| Vasya | Mutual attraction |
| Rajju | Longevity of the marriage bond |
| Vedha | Freedom from mutual affliction |
How should you read the result?
A higher count is better, but the ten tests do not carry equal weight. Many readers treat a clear Rajju and Vedha as essential and look at the rest as supporting. A match with a few misses can still be accepted when other factors are strong, and a high count can be set aside when the charts show a serious problem.
Porutham looks only at the Moon. It does not read the Lagna, the seventh house, the dashas or Mangal Dosha, which a complete matching includes. Treat this result as the first screen before a full reading.

Porutham Calculator: Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Porutham calculator?
A Porutham calculator compares the birth stars and Moon signs of a bride and groom against the ten traditional poruthams used in South Indian horoscope matching. It reports which tests match and which do not.
What are the 10 poruthams?
They are Dina, Gana, Mahendra, Stree Deergha, Yoni, Rasi, Rasyadhipathi, Vasya, Rajju and Vedha. Each checks a different aspect of compatibility between the two stars and Moon signs.
How many poruthams should match for a good marriage?
There is no single rule. Many readers like to see most poruthams match, and they treat Rajju and Vedha as essential. The count must be read with both charts, the dashas and Mangal Dosha.
Which is more important, Rajju or Dina?
Most Tamil readers give Rajju more weight than Dina. Rajju is read for the longevity of the marriage bond, and a mismatch is seldom ignored.
Is Porutham the same as Gun Milan?
No. Porutham is the South Indian method with ten tests, and Gun Milan, also called Ashtakoota, is the North Indian method scored out of 36. They share some tests, such as Gana, Yoni, Nadi and Bhakoot, and differ in scoring.
Do I need the birth time for Porutham?
Only if the Moon changes nakshatra on the birth date. The calculator checks this and asks for the time when it matters.
