The Legend of Palani

Why Palani is one of the six abodes

The best-known legend of Palani is about a divine fruit, the gnana pazham. Narada brought it to Shiva and Parvati, and Murugan and Ganesha each hoped to win it. Ganesha circled his parents and won. Murugan, hurt, left Kailasa and settled on the hill at Palani, where he stands as Dhandayuthapani, the ascetic with only a staff.

The temple is on a hillock. Visitors can climb the steps, about 689 by one tourism count, or take the ropeway. Tradition holds that the idol is made of navapashanam, a nine-mineral preparation, by the siddha Bogar, though details should be confirmed with the temple. Vaikasi Visakam, Karthigai Deepam and Aadi Krithigai are major festivals.

Palani and Skanda Sashti

Skanda Sashti is observed here along with the rest of Tamil Nadu, and Palani’s large festival days are Vaikasi Visakam, Karthigai Deepam and Aadi Krithigai. Palani also draws devotees who walk long distances carrying kavadi.

For the 2026 dates and the vratam, see the Skanda Sashti 2026 guide. The wider legend is in the Soorasamharam story.

Planning a Visit to Palani

Confirm timings first. Darshan timings and special queues change in festival weeks, so check with the temple before you travel.

Dress and footwear. Many Tamil Nadu temples have dress codes. Check before you go and wear modest clothing.

Plan around crowds. Festival days bring very large crowds. Allow extra time, especially in Sashti week.

Combine with nearby temples. See the pilgrimage planner for routes that include Palani.
