How to Wish Navratri

A few things worth knowing before you send.

The standard greeting is “Happy Navratri” or, more traditionally, “Shubh Navratri”. In Gujarat you will hear “Jai Mataji” and “Jay Adhya Shakti”. In Bengal, from the sixth day onwards, the greeting shifts to “Shubho Sasthi”, “Shubho Ashtami”, “Shubho Navami” and “Shubho Bijoya” on the tenth day. In north India, “Jai Mata Di” works on any of the nine days and is never out of place.

On timing: send your first wish on the morning of Ghatasthapana — 11 October in 2026 — rather than the night before. Navratri begins with the morning muhurat, not at midnight. For Ashtami and Navami, a separate wish on the day itself is a genuinely nice touch, because those are the days most families are deepest in ritual.

On tone: keep religious specificity light with anyone you do not know well. Wishing goodness, strength and prosperity travels everywhere. And one small courtesy — many people are fasting through these nine days, so a message that acknowledges their discipline lands far better than one that does not notice it.

On format: a message written in your own words beats a forwarded image every time, even if yours is three lines and theirs has fireworks.

A Note on Sending Them

Navratri 2026 runs from Sunday 11 October to Monday 19 October, with Dussehra on Tuesday 20 October. Send the first wish on the morning of the 11th, one on Ashtami, one on Navami, and one on Vijayadashami — and to the handful of people who really matter, change a few words so it sounds like you and not like a forward.
