How these ekadashi dates are chosen

The observed day is the one on which Ekadashi is present at local sunrise, the usual rule for Smarta families. Vaishnava traditions may keep a different day. Times are for Bengaluru in India Standard Time. For another city, use the calculator above, since sunrise, sunset and moonrise move the observed day for some dates.

What is Ekadashi?

Ekadashi is the 11th tithi of the Shukla (bright) and Krishna (dark) fortnights. Vaishnava families observe it with a fast and night-time worship of Lord Vishnu, and many other families keep it too. A year usually has 24 Ekadashis, and 26 when an extra lunar month falls in.

Traditional practice is to abstain from grains and beans on the day, to take only fruit, milk or a single simple meal as health allows, and to break the fast the next morning after sunrise, within the Dwadashi tithi. People with health conditions, children, pregnant women and the elderly should follow medical advice and not fast strictly.

Why the Ekadashi date differs between sources

A tithi is a stretch of time measured from the Moon’s angle to the Sun, so it begins and ends at any hour. It often covers part of two civil days, and each source applies its own rule to pick one. Tables here use one stated rule, and show the exact start and end of the tithi so you can check it yourself.

The tithi times come from the same astronomical engine as the Poojas.in panchang. For Bengaluru on 9 November 2026 the Amavasya end time and on 21 November 2026 the Ekadashi end time both matched Drik Panchang to the minute. Your temple or priest has the final word on which day to observe.

Ekadashi Dates: Frequently Asked Questions

What are the Ekadashi dates in 2026?

The remaining Ekadashi dates in 2026 from 2 November are 5 November, 21 November, 4 December and 20 December, calculated for Bengaluru with the sunrise rule. The table on this page lists them with tithi timings.

What are the Ekadashi dates in 2027?

The full list for 2027 is in the table on this page, with the tithi start and end time for each. Use the calculator for your own city, because a few dates can move by a day between places.

When is the next Ekadashi?

Use the calculator above for your city. It shows every Ekadashi in the chosen year with its date and tithi times, so the next one is the first date after today.

How do I know which day to fast for Ekadashi?

Most Smarta families fast on the day Ekadashi is present at sunrise, which is the rule used here. Some Vaishnava traditions follow the Dwadashi day when Ekadashi overlaps Dashami, and temples publish their own dates.

What is the difference between Shukla and Krishna Ekadashi?

Shukla Ekadashi falls in the waxing fortnight and Krishna Ekadashi in the waning fortnight. Each has its own name through the year, and both are observed the same way.

Can Ekadashi dates differ between websites?

Yes. Sites differ in the sunrise convention, the city used and whether they follow the Smarta or Vaishnava rule. The tithi times themselves are astronomical and should agree to the minute.
