Durga Saptashati Parayana: What Nine Days of Chandi Paath Actually Involves

If you have ever sat through a Chandi Paath, you will remember the sound before you remember anything else. Seven hundred verses, chanted without a break, for nine days. It does something to a room.

People come to this parayana for many different reasons, and over the years we have noticed they tend to arrive at a particular kind of moment. Not a small problem. Usually something that has been going on for a while and has started to feel like it is coming from more than one direction at once. Trouble at work and trouble at home. A court matter and an illness. A run of things going wrong that has stopped feeling like coincidence.

Durga Saptashati is the text the tradition reaches for at exactly that point.

What the text is

Durga Saptashati sits inside the Markandeya Purana. Saptashati means seven hundred, and that is the count of verses. They are arranged in thirteen chapters, and those thirteen chapters are grouped into three sections, each dedicated to one form of the Divine Mother.

The first section is Maha Kali. The second is Maha Lakshmi. The third is Maha Saraswati. The text moves through all three because the tradition holds that the Mother’s grace is not a single thing. Protection, prosperity and knowledge are treated as three faces of one presence rather than three separate favours to be asked for.

The narrative spine is a set of battles. Mahishasura Vadha, where the Devi destroys the buffalo demon. Shumbha Nishumbha Samhara, where she destroys the brothers who believed no woman could kill them. These are the chapters people know by name, and they carry the most weight when the parayana is being done for protection.

Read as story, they are battles between the Devi and demons. Read the way the tradition intends, the demons are not somewhere else. That is the part worth sitting with.

Why it is recited over nine days

The nine day form maps the text onto the structure of Navratri, though the parayana can be performed outside Navratri as well. Nine nights, three sections, three nights each. Kali, then Lakshmi, then Saraswati. Destruction of what is obstructing, then establishment of abundance, then the arrival of clarity. The order is not arbitrary.

There are shorter forms. There are also much longer and more elaborate ones, which is what the Chandika Homa and the Dasha Chandi Parayana are. The nine day parayana sits in the middle, and for most families it is the right size of undertaking.

What the tradition says it addresses

The texts and the traditional commentaries associate Durga Saptashati with a wide set of concerns. We will list them as the tradition lists them, without adding promises of our own.

Protection from dangers and mishaps. Relief from troubles caused by enemies, including litigation and trouble from authorities. Protection from fire, water and weapons. Freedom from the influence of negative entities. Relief from disturbing dreams. Relief from adverse planetary periods. Good health and courage. Prosperity and financial stability. Harmony within the family and the blessing of children.

That is a long list, and it is long for a reason. This is not a targeted remedy for one narrow problem. It is the text you turn to when the trouble is general, when it is coming from several directions at once, or when you cannot name precisely what is wrong but something clearly is.

If your situation is specific, a specific remedy will usually serve you better and cost you less. We say this to people regularly.

How we perform it

The parayana runs for nine days. The sankalpa is taken on the first day in the name of the person it is being performed for, using their name, gotra and nakshatra, stating the intention. The full text is recited across the nine days by our purohits in Bangalore, with the appropriate worship at the opening and at the close.

You do not need to be present. The recitation is done on your behalf and in your name, and you receive video and photographs along with prasad once it concludes. Devotees book this from the US, the UK, the Gulf, Singapore and Australia as often as from within India.

Practical details

The nine day Durga Saptashati Parayana is Rs 27,000, inclusive of samagri, dakshina and courier. Payment is available in ten currencies.

We need the name, gotra and nakshatra of the person the parayana is for, plus date and place of birth. Not knowing your gotra is not an obstacle. Tell us and we will handle it.

If you are trying to decide between this and the larger Chandika Homa, the short answer is that the homa is a fire ritual on a considerably bigger scale and is usually taken up for severe and prolonged difficulty. Write to us with your situation and Dr. Mekhala’s team will tell you which one your chart actually calls for.
