What does the Lagna calculator show?
The Lagna calculator shows your rising sign to the degree, the nakshatra and pada in which the Lagna falls, and the sign that rules it. It then places every planet in a house counted from the Lagna, so you can see which planet sits in which house.
In Jyotisha the Lagna is treated as the most personal point of the chart. The sign on the first house sets the Lagna lord, and the position of that lord is one of the first things a reader looks at. The same planets can read very differently for two people whose Lagnas differ.
How this lagna calculator works out your ascendant
The Lagna depends on the local sidereal time at your birth, your latitude and the tilt of the Earth’s axis. The calculator converts your local birth time to universal time using your city’s historical time zone, finds the sidereal time, and solves for the ecliptic degree crossing the eastern horizon.
The calculation is then moved into the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsha. Houses are whole-sign, which is the older Parashari method. In that method the sign containing the Lagna is the entire first house, the next sign is the second house, and so on.

Why does an exact birth time matter for the Lagna?
The sky turns once a day, so the rising sign changes about every two hours. A birth recorded as around 6 in the morning could therefore fall in two different Lagnas. Hospital records, birth certificates and the family horoscope are better sources than memory.
If your recorded time is only approximate, calculate the Lagna for a few minutes either side. If the sign does not change, the result is safe to use. If it does change, a reader may suggest birth time rectification, which uses life events to narrow the time.
