What is today’s Nakshatra? Today’s Nakshatra is the lunar mansion occupied by the Moon in the Vedic sidereal zodiac at a particular time. Since the Moon may cross from one Nakshatra into another during the same civil date, a complete daily result includes the Nakshatra name and the exact time at which it ends. The Daily Nakshatra Calculator above is built to show that transition rather than assigning a single star to the whole date.

Vedic Context

What Is a Nakshatra in Vedic Astrology?

In Jyotisha, the sidereal zodiac is divided into 27 Nakshatras, often described in English as lunar mansions. Each Nakshatra covers 13°20′ of the zodiac. The Moon moves through these divisions continuously, making Nakshatra an important element of the Hindu calendar, Panchanga study and many traditional timing practices.

The Nakshatras begin with Ashwini and continue through Bharani, Krittika, Rohini, Mrigashira and the remaining lunar mansions until Revati. Every Nakshatra has a traditional Devata, planetary ruler, symbolic quality and four Padas. These associations are used within Jyotisha to understand the character of a lunar position and its relationship with other chart factors.

27 Nakshatras Across 360 Degrees

The full zodiac of 360° is divided into 27 equal Nakshatra segments. Dividing 360° by 27 gives 13°20′ for each lunar mansion.

Four Padas Within Every Nakshatra

Each Nakshatra contains four Padas of 3°20′ each. This produces 108 Padas across the zodiac and gives a more precise description of the Moon’s position.

How the Tool Works

How Is the Daily Nakshatra Calculated?

The Daily Nakshatra Calculator uses the Moon’s astronomical longitude and converts that position into the Vedic sidereal zodiac using Lahiri ayanamsha. The sidereal longitude is then mapped to one of the 27 Nakshatra divisions. The same position can also identify the Moon’s Pada and Chandra Rashi.

1

The Moon’s Position Is Calculated

The engine determines the Moon’s geocentric ecliptic longitude for the selected date and time.

2

Lahiri Ayanamsha Is Applied

The tropical longitude is converted into a sidereal longitude so the result follows the Vedic zodiac reference used by the calculator.

3

The Nakshatra and Pada Are Identified

The Moon’s sidereal longitude is placed inside the correct 13°20′ Nakshatra segment and the corresponding 3°20′ Pada.

4

The Transition Time Is Refined

If the Moon reaches the next Nakshatra boundary during the selected date, the calculator identifies the change and displays the time of transition.

Reading Your Result

What Does the Nakshatra Calculator Show?

Today’s Nakshatra and Ending Time

The main result shows which Nakshatra is active and when it ends. If another Nakshatra begins later that day, the result can show the second lunar mansion as well.

Current Nakshatra Pada

The Pada gives a finer division within the Nakshatra. A single Nakshatra has four Padas, numbered 1 through 4.

Moon Sign or Chandra Rashi

The Moon sign is based on the same sidereal lunar longitude, but it uses the 12 Rashi divisions of 30° each rather than the 27 Nakshatra divisions.

Nakshatra Lord and Devata

The result can also show the traditional planetary ruler and presiding deity associated with the active Nakshatra.

Important Distinction

Daily Nakshatra Calculator vs Birth Nakshatra Calculator

These are related tools, but they answer different questions. A Daily Nakshatra Calculator tells you which lunar mansion is active on a calendar date and when it changes. A birth Nakshatra calculator finds the Nakshatra occupied by the Moon at a person’s exact time of birth.

Why Two Nakshatras Can Appear

Can There Be Two Nakshatras on the Same Day?

Yes. A civil date is defined by the clock, but the Moon does not wait for midnight before changing Nakshatra. A transition happens whenever the Moon crosses the next 13°20′ sidereal boundary. This can occur in the morning, afternoon, evening or night.

For example, one date may begin with Rohini and then change to Mrigashira later in the day. In that case, simply writing “today’s Nakshatra is Rohini” would be incomplete after the change. This is why the end time is one of the most important pieces of information in a daily Nakshatra result.

AEO answer: A single calendar date can contain two Nakshatras because the Moon may cross a Nakshatra boundary before that date ends. To know the correct Nakshatra for a specific activity or time, check the transition time rather than relying only on the Nakshatra at midnight or noon.

27 Lunar Mansions

27 Nakshatras in Vedic Astrology

The Daily Nakshatra Calculator can return any one of the 27 classical Nakshatras depending on the Moon’s sidereal longitude. The sequence begins with Ashwini at the start of Mesha and ends with Revati at the end of Meena. The planetary rulers follow a repeating nine-planet sequence, while each Nakshatra also has its own traditional presiding deity.

This reference is useful when you want to understand the name shown in your result. It is not a substitute for a complete Muhurta or birth-chart analysis, because traditional interpretation also considers Tithi, Vara, Yoga, Karana, Tara Bala, Chandra Bala and the purpose of the activity.

Location & Time

Does Your City Change the Nakshatra?

The Moon’s geocentric Nakshatra is the same worldwide at the same instant. Your city does not change the astronomical lunar mansion. What location changes is the local clock time and, in some parts of the world, the civil date on which the same universal transition is experienced.

For Poojas.in’s India-focused daily view, transition timings can be displayed in Indian Standard Time. If international local-time support is added later, the underlying Nakshatra boundary remains the same while the displayed clock time changes according to the selected time zone.

Why Poojas.in

Built Around Vedic Astrology, Not a Generic Horoscope Widget

Poojas.in is founded by Dr. Mekhala V Jois and focuses on Vedic astrology, traditional remedies and spiritual services. This calculator is designed around the Vedic sidereal framework rather than Western tropical Sun-sign astrology.

The purpose of the tool is to make a specific Jyotisha calculation easier to access while keeping the distinction between an automated astronomical result and a complete personal chart reading clear.

When a Calculator Is Enough

Use the Daily Nakshatra Calculator when you want the lunar mansion, Pada, Moon sign or transition timing for a date.

When a Consultation Adds Context

If your question concerns marriage, career, finances, family, remedies, Dasha, transits or the interaction of Nakshatra with your birth chart, a full Vedic astrology consultation examines more than the Moon’s daily position.

Frequently Asked

Daily Nakshatra Calculator: FAQ

What is today’s Nakshatra?

Today’s Nakshatra is the lunar mansion occupied by the Moon in the Vedic sidereal zodiac at the time you are checking. Since the Moon can move into the next Nakshatra during the same date, the correct daily answer should include the Nakshatra name and its ending or transition time.

How do I find today’s Nakshatra and Nakshatra timing?

Select today’s date in the Daily Nakshatra Calculator above. The calculator identifies the Moon’s sidereal longitude, maps it to one of the 27 Nakshatras and shows the relevant transition time if the Nakshatra changes during the day.

Can I check tomorrow’s Nakshatra with this calculator?

Yes. Use the next-day control or select tomorrow’s date directly. You can also select future calendar dates to see the Nakshatra expected to run on those dates and the approximate daily transition sequence calculated by the tool.

Can I find the Nakshatra for a past date?

Yes. Select a previous date or use the previous-day control. This is useful when you want to review which Nakshatra was active on an earlier calendar date without entering personal birth details.

Why does the calculator show two Nakshatras on one date?

The Moon changes Nakshatra whenever it crosses the next sidereal boundary, and that can happen at any clock time. If the transition occurs before the civil date ends, one Nakshatra runs before the change and another runs after it.

What is the difference between Nakshatra and Moon sign?

Nakshatra divides the 360° zodiac into 27 lunar mansions of 13°20′ each. Moon sign, or Chandra Rashi, divides the same zodiac into 12 signs of 30° each. Both are calculated from the Moon’s sidereal position, but they use different divisions.

Does the Daily Nakshatra Calculator use Lahiri ayanamsha?

Yes. The Poojas.in calculator is designed around the Vedic sidereal zodiac using Lahiri ayanamsha. The Moon’s astronomical longitude is converted to its sidereal position before the Nakshatra, Pada and Moon sign are identified.

Is this Daily Nakshatra Calculator the same as a Janma Nakshatra calculator?

No. A Daily Nakshatra Calculator finds the lunar mansion active on a selected calendar date. A Janma Nakshatra calculator finds the Moon’s Nakshatra at a person’s exact birth moment, which requires birth date, birth time and birth place.

Want to Understand What Your Nakshatra Means in Your Birth Chart?
